Joining a group for the first time can be scary, you're not sure what you're in for. Explorations in Travel has been offering active travel opportunities since 1991. We know how to make it easy. Traveling should be exciting, not terrifying.
The owner and founder, Debbie Jacobs (yours truly) has been designing, organizing and leading women's travel adventures for over 25 years. I began leading trips in college and haven't stopped since.
You don't need to feel pressure or stress on a vacation. Our adventures are designed by women over 40 for women over 40. No one worries about what your hair looks like or that you forgot to put on lipstick.
Just because you enjoy being active doesn't mean you want to race through your trip. We do not run Olympic events. You don't have to be an athlete or dare devil to join us! The activities offered on our trips are geared to beginners as well as more experienced travelers. We balance activity and relaxation. Take things slow if that's what you like.
It's your vacation and our leaders bend over backwards (quite a feat for women over 40) to provide you with the experience you're after. Our groups are not so big that you are just a number or face in the crowd.
Just because you want to travel with a group doesn't mean you're looking for a cookie cutter travel experience. We're in this for the fun of it and take great pride in offering unique itineraries that take travelers off the beaten track. We love the quirky and places and activities that exemplify the spirit of the place we're visiting.
Most of the women who join us on trips have traveled with us before and the chances are the new folks will again!
There are lots of reason to be excited about summer, but joining one of our New England adventures will certainly be the highlight. These short getaways are for everyone, beginners are welcome! Our New England Hike & Raft Adventure is a perennial hit and the Vermont Hike & Kayak trips in August and September are

Narrowboating In The U.K. has got to be one of the most unique ways to explore the countryside of England and Wales. We’ll have our own boat to drive and live aboard, stopping along the way for meals in local pubs and restaurants. There is a distinct culture on the canals and it’s fun to see the looks on the faces of the men who typically drive their own boats, when a group of ‘lady yanks’ waves in passing. It is possible to get off the boat and walk every day and we’ll also visit historic sites along the way. Check this trip out!
Thinking of bringing along that extra suitcase. Think again. United Airlines is imposing an additional $25 fee for a second checked bag starting in May. If you are flying first class or are a frequent flyer you will be exempt. I suspect that two check-in bags are going to go the way of bags of peanuts. Other airlines are sure to follow and Spirit Airlines is the first to jump on the bandwagon. Oversized baggage fees on United are doubling from $50 to $100. It makes the demise of peanuts on flights seem like....well....small peanuts.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is a resource for a variety of environmental excursions. Join biologists and researchers for wildlife watches and other events.
Traveling with a big black wheeled suitcase? If so then join the ranks of hundreds of other passengers waiting at the baggage claim. Along with a colorful ribbon or strap to diverentiate your bag from flock, put an electronic key finder in an outer pocket. Carry the locator button with you and if you're worried about whether your bag in on the carousel or has been removed by another passenger you can press the locator and listen for your bag.
